This 11-night photo-intensive itinerary has been designed for travelers aiming to grow their photographic skills while in the African bush on safari. The two safari locations included in this itinerary are standouts on their continent for their commitment to the guest who has photographic interests and have trained their field teams accordingly. Each provides unique features that are certain to enhance the guests understanding of photographing African wildlife.

Our time in South Africa begins with an arrival into Johannesburg on July 2, 2022 with two nights at the stunning Saxon Hotel & Villas. Our first full-day in South Africa will be spent reviewing collections of acclaimed African wildlife photographs to fuel our creative spirit and train our eye for the days ahead.

The following morning, we aim directly for the bush by light-aircraft and our 4-night safari experience at Mashatu Game Reserve in south-eastern Botswana. Our time at Mashatu Euphorbia Villas will be followed by a 5-night Londolozi Founders Camp stay where we will enjoy time in a particularly productive safari environment.

“I am very much looking forward to traveling this itinerary and having my camera equipment in my hands for 8-10 hours a day, while working closely with the photographic and field teams at each location.  The teams will ensure our goals are sharply in-focus and our efforts position us to capture exceptional African wildlife images to be printed large and hung on the wall!” Ryan Hilton

Mashatu’s Grand Landscape

Mashatu Game Reserve comprises 29,000 hectares (72000 acres) of privately owned land in the conserved wilderness area known as the Northern Tuli Game Reserve. The reserve lies in the eastern extremity of Botswana where the great Limpopo and Shashe Rivers converge. This exceptionally diverse landscape includes wide open plains, grassland, riverine forests, rocky hills, marshland and majestic sandstone ridges.

Mashatu, “Land of the Giants”, takes its name from the locally sacrosanct Mashatu or Nyala berry tree (Xanthrocercis zambesiaca) and the giants that roam its terrain. These magnificent dark green trees, which are found along the rivers in the reserve, provide refuge, shade and food to a myriad wildlife. Mashatu, which is one of the largest privately owned game reserves in southern Africa, avails a sanctuary to the largest herds of elephant on privately owned land on the continent. In addition to that, the world’s tallest mammal, the giraffe, the world’s largest antelope, the eland, the world’s largest bird, the ostrich, and the world’s heaviest flying bird, the kori bustard are all part of the game drive experience on Mashatu. Add the king of the beasts, the lion and the iconic baobab tree…and you have Africa’s big seven land based giants.

Mashatu Euphorbia Villas

Mashatu Euphorbia is the new 5-star camp, situated in the privately owned Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana. This “green” camp combines luxury with conservation and sustainability, where solar energy and state of the art water processing systems ensure a harmonious blend with the African bush. Mashatu Euphorbia is set high up on a cliff face amongst a forest of euphorbia succulents which open up to reveal exquisite vistas of the river and plains below. With a maximum of 16 guests, an intimate ambiance is created, where warm and engaging local staff are on hand.
